Jennifer Tilly was conceived in Los Angeles on 16 September 1958 in very poor circumstances. Her mother, a failed teacher and actor, was a salesperson for automobiles, while her father worked as an auto salesman. Jennifer was the second child of her parents and frequently took her mother, who was employed as a schoolteacher and a theater teacher, to performances. She found her very impressive. Jennifer's parents split when she was five. Jennifer was raised in British Columbia by her mother, who moved with her siblings.
